The Importance of Milestone Sessions for Your Baby’s First Year

I love newborn photography and it is my number one focus and what I built my business around. But I feel it is neglect to also capture the first year because they change so quickly. Capturing the memories of your baby’s early days is an emotional and rewarding experience. While newborn sessions are essential for documenting those delicate weeks after birth, milestone sessions play an equally important role in preserving the unique growth and development of your little one. Let’s take a look into why these sessions are essential, highlighting the significance of each stage within your baby’s first year.

Understanding Milestone Sessions

Milestone sessions are specifically designed to capture your baby’s growth at the quickly changing stages during their first year. Typically arranged at three, six, nine months, and one year, these sessions mark significant developmental milestones, such as:

3 Months:

At this stage, your baby begins to develop better head control and starts engaging with their surroundings. Adorable expressions and interactions can be beautifully captured as they begin to smile and respond to your voice. These age group isn’t as crucial to me (unless you are doing a Mommy and me session or a short family session) as they tent to be on the fussier side and sessions are shorter than the later stages. But I will say capturing their early expressions will tug at your heart and one to remember for years to come.

6 Months:

Often considered the “sitting” stage, babies around six months can usually sit up independently but more often I do not see them sitting up unassisted at this age so don’t stress if your baby is not. This is a dynamic time filled with curious exploration, making it perfect for capturing their growing personality and laughter. The world comes to life because they have mastered this milestone and have so much happiness to share.

9 Months:

Your baby is now on the move! Many babies begin crawling or pulling themselves up to stand. This mobility brings a new level of excitement and energy to photographs, showcasing their inquisitiveness and the bond they share with their environment. This is one of my favorite stages to capture and there is so much to capture at this stage.

1 Year:

The first birthday marks a grand celebration of growth and development. Your little one is not just walking but might also be babbling or saying a few words. A cake smash is a popular theme for this session, symbolizing the carefree joy of childhood and the laughter in the studio fills us all with so much joy!

Why Milestone Sessions Matter

Documenting Growth

Each milestone session provides a tangible record of how much your baby changes monthly. You’ll begin to see their personality emerge through facial expressions, movements, and interactions.

Creating Lasting Memories

The first year of life is fleeting. Milestone sessions create lasting memories that families can cherish forever. These photographs serve as a beautiful visual narrative of your child’s growth.

Celebrating Achievements

Just like adults celebrate significant achievements, marking your child’s milestones creates a sense of joy and accomplishment. Every phase is worth celebrating, and acknowledging these achievements through photography helps nurture a loving environment.

Family Bonding

These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for family bonding. Capture your family’s love and togetherness during these hurried early years, ensuring that everyone is part of your baby’s story.

Professional Quality

Professional photographers know how to capture those fleeting moments with skill and artistry. From lighting to posing, they create images that you’ll love and treasure. Plus, these sessions allow parents to be present, enjoying the moment instead of worrying about capturing it on their own.

Final Thoughts

Bringing your baby in for milestone sessions after their newborn shoot is essential in creating a beautiful visual story of their early life. Each stage of the first year is filled with unique developments, making it crucial to capture these moments as they unfold. Not only do these sessions mark the passage of time, but they also foster family connections and create treasured memories that will last a lifetime. So, don’t miss out on the opportunity to document these precious phases in your child’s journey—each milestone is worth celebrating!

How to prepare for your newborn photography session at Inspirations Photography where everything is provided for you. Welcoming a newborn into your family is an exciting and life-changing event. Capturing those first few days with professional newborn photography creates timeless memories you’ll cherish forever. At Inspirations Photography, I want to ensure your session goes smoothly and your baby is comfortable, safe, and ready for their close-up. Here’s a helpful guide to prepare for your newborn photography session with me.

1. Schedule Early

Newborn photography sessions are best done within the first two weeks of life, ideally I like to see them between days 10 and 18. During this period, babies are sleepier, more flexible, and less prone to newborn acne. Although I have done them earlier than this and later than this as all newborns are different and go through stages differently. For nursing Moms, bringing them in too early can bring an extra fussiness if they are not getting the amount of milk needed and Mom is having to supplement. Bringing them in later can result in a very awake baby and for larger babies, they may not fit in many of my props. Contact us during your pregnancy to secure a session around your due date. Choosing a tentative date helps us all prepare for your session.

2. Keep Baby Awake Before the Session

Although, this may not work for many, depending on your travel time, it can help get them ready for their session. To get those adorable sleepy poses, try to keep your baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session. A bath, some playtime, or gentle stimulation can help. A sleepy baby is more likely to remain calm and pose easily. Sometimes I will hear rom parents that their baby was up most of the night…which can result in an amazing sleepy time for us.

3. Feed Your Baby Right Before the Session

A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby. I like to call this being “milk drunk”. Plan to feed your little one right before your appointment. Depending on how far you are traveling, if you need the time to do this in my studio please feel free to do this before we start. If you’re breastfeeding, try to avoid caffeine and spicey foods 24 hours beforehand.  Extra bottles of milk are also a recomendation or you are welcome to nurse during breaks.

5. Bring Essentials

Pack extra diapers, wipes, a pacifier, and extra milk. I keep my studio warm for baby’s comfort, so dress in light layers. Also, if you forget any of these items from home…my studio is fully stocked. I try to make sure this time is as comfortable and stress free as possible
