When to Book Your Maternity Session (and Why the Timing Matters!)

Pregnancy is such a beautiful and transformative season, and it deserves to be celebrated and documented! One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “When should I book my maternity session?”

With my experience over the years, I recommend scheduling your maternity photos between 27 and 32 weeks. This time frame is ideal because your belly is beautifully round and prominent, but you’re likely still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience. It also gives me the time to deliver your images of you are wanting to use them for baby shower display or invites. Every pregnancy is different, but this window tends to strike that perfect balance for most expecting moms.

My collection features pieces in neutral and warm tones, chosen to reflect the soft, earthy beauty of motherhood and to photograph timelessly in natural light. This matches my style and keeps the images more timeless. I do have some other options as well so be sure to discuss with me what you are looking for.

You’re also welcome to bring your own outfits — I’ll help guide you to ensure your look fits the tone and vision of your session.

Why Printing Your Newborn Photos Is So Important

Preserving Memories Beyond the Screen

As a newborn photographer for almost 20 years, I have had the privilege of capturing many of the most meaningful moments in a family’s life—their baby’s very first days. Those tiny fingers, soft wrinkles, and sleepy little expressions are more than just sweet—they’re fleeting. And while digital galleries are convenient, there’s something truly special about holding those memories in your hands. I know how time consuming figuring out what you want printed and where you should put these. I would love to help guide you in this decision at my newborn studio in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Here’s why printing your newborn photos is one of the most important decisions you can make for your family

Prints Make Memories Tangible

In our digital world, it’s easy to let photos live on phones or computers. But there’s something powerful about a print. You can touch it, display it, frame it. It becomes a real, physical part of your home—a daily reminder of a moment that mattered. I truly believe printed photographs help families keep their history alive, give children a tactile testament of the love their parents have for them, and may perhaps even instill some small sense of self-esteem in their hearts. I have always loved the quote from Richard L. Evans, “Children will not remember you for the material things you provide, but for the feeling that you cherished them.” Having images on your walls and in albums for them to look at and cherish over the years is so important. Printed Photos Tell Your Family’s Story. Imagine your baby growing up and flipping through an album of their newborn photos. It’s more than just nostalgia—it’s their story. It shows them how loved they were from the very beginning. That kind of connection is something digital files alone can’t offer.

Technology Changes, Prints Last

Hard drives fail. Phones get replaced. Social media platforms come and go. But a printed photo? It doesn’t need a charger or a login. It will still be there, decades from now, in an album or frame, waiting to be passed down to your child someday.

They Deserve to Be Displayed

Your baby’s first portraits deserve more than a quick scroll on a screen—they deserve a place on your walls, in your nursery, in your family room. Seeing them every day brings joy, sparks conversation, and makes your house feel even more like home.

Albums and Prints Are Heirlooms

When you invest in professional photography, you’re investing in your family’s legacy. Albums, wall art, and prints become keepsakes you’ll treasure forever—and that your child will treasure, too, when they’re older. I love designing albums and helping my clients choose images for their walls. Custom albums can be added to your session during the booking process.

So print the photos. Frame them. Create an album. Hang them proudly.

These are more than just pictures. They are your baby’s first story—the beginning of everything. And it deserves to be seen, shared, and remembered for generations to come.

Would you like help creating a print collection or heirloom album from your session with me? I’d love to guide you through the process and help turn your digital gallery into something you can hold forever. Be sure to contact me for booking information. What You Need to Know Before Hiring a Newborn Photographer

Are you considering newborn photography but have some questions? Here is what you need to know before hiring someone.

Don’t worry, I’m here to help!

As a studio newborn photographer, I understand the value and importance of capturing these early moments of your baby’s life! If you’re a new parent, you’re probably overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make. Newborn photography doesn’t have to be one of them. Let me guide you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to capture the early moments of your baby’s life.

The Chance of Lost Memories

I cannot stress to you enough about the importance of documenting this stage in your newborns life. When I was scheduled to have a C-section with my second child 28 years ago, we completely forgot the camera. We did not have phones with a handy and quick camera back then. I now don’t have the memory of his birth. I am so sad to this day. Remembering all his sweet new details are gone. So trust me when I say you will not regret capturing this time and having them forever.

So….Let’s dive into some of the most common questions about newborn photography.

“What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer?”

It’s important to choose a photographer who specializes in newborn photography and has experience working with infants. At my Wilmington newborn studio, I have years of experience working with newborns and their families. I’m dedicated to providing a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable experience for you and your baby. I understand the importance of capturing these early moments, and I take pride in creating beautiful, timeless memories that you’ll cherish for years to come.

“What can I expect during a newborn photography session?”

During a newborn photography session, I’ll work to create a comfortable and safe environment for your baby, and guide you through the posing process. You can include your family members in the photos, and I encourage parents and siblings to participate in this special moment. If you have any specific poses or props in mind, I’m always happy to incorporate your ideas and preferences into the session. To capture the best moments, it’s important to schedule your newborn photography session as early as possible, ideally within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. I recommend booking your session as soon as possible during your pregnancy to ensure availability.

Every newborn is different so learning what they like and don’t like during our pose selection is important to me. Making sure they are warm and fed is number one priority. With my newborn prep guide that I send to you prior to your session date will help us make sure they are comfortable. Also, my number one priority is making sure they are safe! If there is a special pose that you are requesting, I make sure there is assistance and baby is at arms reach and hands are always on baby. Making you and your baby comfortable in my studio is important. If you have any questions about my work please don’t hesitate to ask.

“Do I need to bring anything?”

You don’t need to bring anything to the session that is needed for me to work. I provide all the props, headbands, bonnets including backdrops, and blankets. However, I encourage you to bring a few personal items that you would like to incorporate into the photos, like a special blanket or toy (this is optional)!

“When will I get my photos?”

After the session, you can expect to receive the final edited photos within 2-3 weeks. I offer a variety of prints and products that can be purchased when booking your session or once your images are sent. I’m happy to work with you to create a customized package that meets your specific needs.

“How much does newborn photography cost?”

Newborn photography sessions can range from $450 to $650+ at my Wilmington newborn photographer studio. Depending on the package. Please keep in mind that newborn photography is a specialized service that requires a lot of time, effort, and equipment. I’m dedicated to providing high-quality images & products that you’ll cherish for a lifetime! I always like to make sure my clients are aware of the importance of printing their images and adding them to their walls. Don’t take the chance of loosing images to a faulty hard rive.

The Significance of Maternity Beach Sessions

Maternity beach sessions hold a special significance in capturing the essence of motherhood. They are my favorite types of maternity sessions to capture. The sound of crashing waves and the gentle touch of sand beneath your feet create a serene atmosphere that allows you to connect with the natural beauty around you.

A maternity beach session allows you to celebrate the beauty of your changing body. Pregnancy is a time of transformation, and the beach provides a unique canvas to showcase the glow and radiance that comes with carrying new life. The soft, golden light that often graces the beach during sunrise or sunset adds an ethereal touch to your photographs, enhancing the natural beauty of the expectant mother.

When you look back at your maternity beach session photos, you will be able to relive the joy, excitement, and anticipation of this special time in your life. It is a visual reminder of the strength and beauty that you possess as a woman and as a mother-to-be.

Choosing the Right Beach Location for Your Maternity Session

When selecting a beach location for your maternity session, do you prefer a secluded and intimate beach, or are you drawn to the vibrant energy of a popular beach? There is definitely both options that offer within the North Carolina coast. There are a few beaches I love to shoot at including Wrightsville Beach, North Topsail Beach and North Carolina Beach State Park. I love warm tones and light creams that these locations bring. My maternity sessions are held an hour before sunset and I provide a variety of maternity gowns that you can choose from. I love warm tones and light creams that these locations bring. And If you have a dress in mind, let’s coordinate!

Planning Your Maternity Session Outfits

Your choice of outfits for your maternity beach session can greatly impact the overall look and feel of your photos. When selecting your outfits, consider the colors that complement your skin tone and the beach environment. Soft earthy tones, and shades of blue often work well in beach settings, creating a harmonious and cohesive look.

Flowy dresses and maxi skirts are popular choices for maternity beach sessions as they accentuate the curves of your baby bump while allowing for movement and creating a whimsical and romantic look.

If you prefer a more casual and relaxed vibe, opt for a comfortable yet stylish ensemble. Pair a loose-fitting top with maternity jeans or shorts for a laid-back beach look. Don’t be afraid to accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat, statement jewelry to add an extra touch of personality to your outfit.

Remember to dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions. The beach can be unpredictable, so having options like a light cardigan or a sheer cover-up will ensure your comfort throughout the session. I have a variety to choose from.

When choosing outfits for your partner or other family members participating in the session, coordinate colors and styles to create a cohesive and visually pleasing look. You can opt for complementary colors or stick to a neutral palette to let the natural beauty of the beach shine through. If you are expecting be sure to book your 3D/4D ultrasound with Wombs Window to receive a gift card to use towards your maternity session with me.

3. Read Reviews: Online reviews can be a valuable source of information when choosing a newborn photographer. Read reviews from previous clients to get a sense of their satisfaction level and overall experience with the photographer.

4. Interview Potential Photographers: Once you’ve narrowed down your list, reach out to the photographers and schedule interviews or consultations. Prepare a list of questions to ask them about their experience, approach to newborn photography, pricing, and any other concerns you may have.

5. Trust Your Instincts: Ultimately, trust your instincts when making a decision. Choose a photographer who not only has the technical skills but also makes you feel comfortable and at ease. A positive connection between the photographer and the family can greatly enhance the overall experience.

Finding the best newborn photographer near you is a personal decision, and it’s important to take the time to find someone who aligns with your vision and values.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Newborn Photographer

When choosing a newborn photographer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re making an informed decision. Here are a few key questions to ask during your interviews or consultations:

1. What is your experience with newborn photography?: Inquire about the photographer’s experience specifically with newborns. Newborn photography requires a unique set of skills and understanding, so it’s important to choose someone who specializes in this genre.

2. What safety measures do you have in place?: Safety should be a top priority during a newborn photoshoot. Ask the photographer about their approach to ensuring the baby’s safety and comfort. They should have a clear plan for handling and posing newborns safely.

3. What is your style of newborn photography?: Every photographer has their own style and approach. Make sure their style aligns with your vision for the photoshoot. Whether you prefer posed portraits or lifestyle shots, choose a photographer who can deliver the aesthetic you desire.

4. What is included in your packages?: Understand what is included in the photographer’s packages, such as the number of digital images, prints, and any additional services. This will help you make an informed decision based on your budget and desired outcome.

5. What is your turnaround time?: Inquire about the photographer’s turnaround time for delivering the final images. New parents are often eager to share their baby’s photos with family and friends, so it’s important to have a clear understanding of when you can expect to receive the images.

Asking these questions will help you gather important information and make an informed decision when selecting a newborn photographer.

What to Expect During a Newborn Session

A newborn photography session is a unique and memorable experience for both the parents and the baby. Understanding what to expect can help you better prepare for the session and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here’s a general overview of what typically happens during a newborn photography session:

1. Scheduling: Newborn photography sessions are typically scheduled within the first two weeks of the baby’s life when they are still sleepy and more easily posed. It’s important to book your session well in advance to secure a spot with your chosen photographer.

2. Preparation: We will provide you with guidelines on how to prepare your baby for the session. This may include keeping the baby awake before the session to ensure they are sleepy during the shoot, feeding them right before the session to keep them content, and dressing them in loose-fitting clothes for easy posing.

3. Props and Setups: We will have a variety of props and setups available to create different looks and themes for the photoshoot. This may include blankets, baskets, hats, and other accessories. You can discuss your preferences with the photographer beforehand to ensure they incorporate your ideas into the session.

4. Posing: We will gently pose your baby into various positions, capturing their tiny features and adorable expressions. Safety is of utmost importance, and the photographer will take great care in handling and posing the baby in a safe and comfortable manner.

5. Patience and Flexibility: Newborn photography sessions can take time, as babies may need breaks for feeding, changing, or comforting. The photographer will be patient and understanding, allowing for breaks as needed to ensure the baby’s comfort and wellbeing.

6. Parent and Sibling Involvement: We offer the option to include parents and siblings in some of the photos. This allows for beautiful family portraits that capture the love and connection between family members.

Tips for Preparing Your Baby for a Newborn Photography Session

Preparing your baby for a newborn photography session can help ensure a successful and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you get ready for the photoshoot:

1. Keep the Baby Awake: To ensure a sleepy baby during the session, try to keep them awake for a couple of hours before the scheduled time. Engage with them through play or gentle interaction to help them expend some energy.

2. Feed the Baby Before the Session: A well-fed and content baby is more likely to be cooperative during the shoot. Feed your baby right before the session to ensure they are comfortable and satisfied.

3. Dress the Baby in Loose-Fitting Clothes: Choose loose-fitting clothes for your baby to avoid leaving marks on their delicate skin. Opt for simple outfits or even just a diaper cover for a more minimalist look.

4. Bring Extra Diapers and Wipes: Accidents happen, especially with newborns. Be prepared by bringing extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes for both the baby and yourself.

5. Keep the Environment Warm: Newborns are used to the warmth of the womb, so it’s important to keep the photography studio or location comfortably warm. This will help keep the baby calm and sleepy throughout the session.

By following these tips, you’ll be better prepared for the newborn photography session, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your baby.

Creative and Unique Newborn Photography Ideas

Newborn photography offers endless possibilities for creativity and personalization. Here are some creative and unique ideas to inspire your newborn photoshoot:

1. Themed Photoshoot: Choose a theme that reflects your interests or hobbies and incorporate it into the photoshoot. Whether it’s a favorite movie, book, or a special family tradition, a themed photoshoot adds a personal touch to the images.

2. Generational Photos: Include grandparents, parents, and the newborn in a generational photo to capture the love and connection between different family members. This can be a beautiful way to document the passing down of traditions and the joining of generations.

3. Incorporate Personalized Props: Bring along props that hold sentimental value or represent something meaningful to your family. This could be a stuffed animal, a family heirloom, or a special blanket.

4. Outdoor Newborn Photography: Take advantage of nature’s beauty by opting for an outdoor newborn photography session. Whether it’s in a lush garden, a picturesque park, or a serene beach, the natural surroundings can add a sense of tranquility and beauty to the images.

5. Sibling Bond: If you have older children, include them in the photoshoot to capture the special bond between siblings. These images will be cherished as a reminder of the love and connection between your children.

Remember, the goal of newborn photography is to capture the unique personality and beauty of your baby. Feel free to discuss your ideas with the photographer and collaborate to create truly memorable and personalized images.

Editing and Retouching in Newborn Photography

After the newborn photography session, the photographer will carefully select and edit the images to enhance their overall quality and aesthetic. Editing and retouching play a crucial role in creating the final polished look of the photographs. Here’s an overview of the editing and retouching process:

1. Culling and Selection: The photographer will go through all the images captured during the session and select the best ones for further editing. They will choose images that best reflect the baby’s unique features, expressions, and the overall vision of the photoshoot.

2. Color Correction: The photographer will adjust the color balance, exposure, and saturation of the images to achieve a consistent and pleasing look. This ensures that the skin tones, props, and backgrounds appear natural and well-balanced.

3. Retouching: Minor retouching may be applied to address any temporary skin imperfections or blemishes. This can include reducing redness, softening skin, or removing minor distractions in the background.

4. Image Enhancement: The photographer may enhance certain elements of the images to make them more visually appealing. This can include sharpening details, enhancing the eyes, or adjusting the overall contrast and clarity.

The editing and retouching process is a delicate balance between enhancing the natural beauty of your baby and maintaining a realistic representation. The final images will reflect the photographer’s artistic vision while keeping the authenticity of your newborn intact.

Maternity Session Intro:

If you’re like a lot of the soon-to-be-mothers I meet, you may be a little camera shy right now. Especially when you’re seven to nine months pregnant. And who can blame you! After all, your body has changed over the last several months, your baby is sitting low and you probably feel uncomfortable even walking from the kitchen to the living room sofa. Believe me, I can absolutely relate.

Let me tell you something, though. You are gorgeous. You are stunning. In this moment, you are the absolute epitome of natural beauty. And every single picture we take together will showcase the inherent grace and elegance that accompanies all women with child.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there is an unparalleled luminescence that radiates from a pregnant woman. A glow so unique to pregnancy that it’s impossible to replicate under any other circumstance. These thoughtful, artistic maternity photos of you will be treasured by you, your significant other, your friends and family and, yes, your unborn child, forever.

In your maternity shoot, we’ll take a variety of photographs of you in different poses. As long as you’re comfortable, we’ll get photographs of you laying down, sitting, standing and leaning. Some will hone in on that adorable baby bump, some may be silhouettes of your frame and others will capture the bond between you and Daddy to be.

Isn’t this adorable couple just glowing with all that mentioned above?! I just love how beautiful she looks.
