When to Book Your Maternity Session (and Why the Timing Matters!)

Pregnancy is such a beautiful and transformative season, and it deserves to be celebrated and documented! One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “When should I book my maternity session?”

With my experience over the years, I recommend scheduling your maternity photos between 27 and 32 weeks. This time frame is ideal because your belly is beautifully round and prominent, but you’re likely still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience. It also gives me the time to deliver your images of you are wanting to use them for baby shower display or invites. Every pregnancy is different, but this window tends to strike that perfect balance for most expecting moms.

A Beautiful Girl Newborn Session

Such a beautiful baby girl came in my studio her beautiful newborn photography session. I just adore her images and love the colors that her parents chose. They go so well with her skin tone which reminds me of Snow White. Am I right?! 🙂

When booking your newborn session it is important to book before you deliver so that all details can be addressed between me, your photographer and you as the parent. There are questions that may ned to be answered and lot of tips that I share. I also want you to have the date you are wanting depending on when you deliver. And adding yourself to my calendar gives you preference. In the unforgettable first moments that follow the birth of a precious newborn, capturing their innocence and purity becomes a treasured keepsake. Newborn photography captures the beauty of these fleeting moments in a timeless and enchanting way.

When booking your session, you are choosing a tentative date and we adjust if needed once your baby arrives. This can help us to plan and lets me know how full my schedule is going to be as dates are adjusted.

A newborn photography session preserves the innocence and vulnerability of a newborn, creating breathtaking portraits that will be cherished for generations to come. From tiny fingers and tiny toes to the serene expressions and soft, wrinkled skin, every detail is carefully preserved, allowing parents to relive these precious moments forever.

At Inspirations Photography, I understand the significance of newborn photography and strive to create a one-of-a-kind experience for parents and their little ones. With over 15 years of experience, I love to capture the essence of each newborn, combining my expertise with a creative and gentle approach. Using soft lighting, natural poses as well as posed and swaddled, I carefully choose props creating stunning images that showcase the unique beauty of every baby.

The Importance of Newborn Photography

Newborn photography holds immense importance for parents as it captures the fleeting moments of their baby’s early days. The first few weeks of a newborn’s life are filled with precious moments that quickly pass by, making it essential to document these moments through photography.

I love to document the true emotions and connections between the newborn and their family members. It freezes time and preserves the innocence and purity that is unique to the newborn stage. These photographs become a tangible representation of love, joy, and the beginning of a new chapter in the family’s life. Capturing the Essence of Newborns

Capturing the essence of newborns requires a skilled and sensitive approach. Newborns are delicate and require special care during photography sessions. To capture their essence, I focus on highlighting their unique features and emotions.

An important aspect is capturing the newborn’s emotions and expressions. Newborns have a wide range of facial expressions, from peaceful and serene to curious and even grumpy

Lastly, capturing the tiny details of newborns is crucial for preserving their essence. From their tiny fingers and toes to their soft, wrinkled skin, these details make each newborn unique. Close-up shots that focus on these details can create intimate and captivating images.

Capturing the essence of newborns requires a sensitive approach that focuses on their natural poses, emotions, and tiny details. By doing so, photographers can create images that truly capture the pure essence of these precious little ones.

Preparing for a Successful Newborn Photography Session

Preparing for a newborn photography session is crucial to ensure a smooth and successful experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Schedule the session within the first two-three weeks. Newborns are often sleepier and more cooperative during the first two-three weeks of their lives. Scheduling the session during this time increases the chances of capturing those peaceful and curled-up poses.
  • Communication. Before the session, be sure you do not have any questions for me, your photographer, and review my tips and prep guide at least a day before your session. So you are aware of all expectations, preferences, and any special requests you may have.
  • Plan for breaks and feedings: Newborns require frequent breaks and feedings during the session. Allow enough time for diaper changes, feeding breaks, and soothing the baby back to sleep. Patience and flexibility are key when working with newborns. Which is why my sessions can last 2-3 hours.newborn sessionnewborn session

Isn’t she so sweet?! I just love how cozy she is all snuggled in these wraps we used for her newborn session. I love all her hair and warm skin tone. She did so good.

Newborn, Maternity FAQ

How do I know what date to chose to book if my baby has not yet arrived?

I recommend booking before you deliver to help me plan my schedule and give those that are on my calendar first dips on moving their date around. So, I have you choose a tentative date 1-2 weeks after your estimated due date. Once baby arrives we can adjust the day.

Do I have control over what images you take?

I have you choose your colors by sending a questionnaire for you to fill out. This helps me know what I will be planning with props, wraps and headbands etc that are available in my studio. If you have a requested pose from my work, you are more than welcome to share and we will add it to your pose line up.

Why is it so important to do newborn photos within the first week or two?

All newborns have a certain “look” to them. Usually within a week or two, that newborn-like quality starts to disappear. The point of newborn photos is to capture that newborn look, so I always recommend photographing within this time period. Two weeks is my favorite time but I have photographed babies at even one month that do well. I just feel two weeks is a sweet spot. Please don’t feel you missed out if you are passed this window. We can definitely capture images at whatever stage your baby is at.

Where do I go for the session?

My studio inside Wombs Window in Wilmington. It is where everything we need for your session is located, including my controlled lighting and baby soothing tools.

What should I wear to my maternity session?

Ultimately, what you wear depends on what you’re comfortable in. That said, I have collected a variety of Momma gowns that ar used for maternity and newborn sessions. Most of them are bump friendly. We will coordinate the colors you’re wanting but that I also work with. You are more than welcome to bring outfits of your own as well.

When should I have my maternity photos taken?

I think some of the best maternity photos are taken between 27-32 mark. This is when you’re really showing, but isn’t so close to your due date that you’re really uncomfortable.

When should I schedule maternity photos?

As a general rule of thumb, I like to schedule your maternity session shortly after you’ve told friends and family the exciting news! This will give us plenty of time to find a great day that works well for both of us.

Maternity Session Intro:

If you’re like a lot of the soon-to-be-mothers I meet, you may be a little camera shy right now. Especially when you’re seven to nine months pregnant. And who can blame you! After all, your body has changed over the last several months, your baby is sitting low and you probably feel uncomfortable even walking from the kitchen to the living room sofa. Believe me, I can absolutely relate.

Let me tell you something, though. You are gorgeous. You are stunning. In this moment, you are the absolute epitome of natural beauty. And every single picture we take together will showcase the inherent grace and elegance that accompanies all women with child.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there is an unparalleled luminescence that radiates from a pregnant woman. A glow so unique to pregnancy that it’s impossible to replicate under any other circumstance. These thoughtful, artistic maternity photos of you will be treasured by you, your significant other, your friends and family and, yes, your unborn child, forever.

In your maternity shoot, we’ll take a variety of photographs of you in different poses. As long as you’re comfortable, we’ll get photographs of you laying down, sitting, standing and leaning. Some will hone in on that adorable baby bump, some may be silhouettes of your frame and others will capture the bond between you and Daddy to be.

Isn’t this adorable couple just glowing with all that mentioned above?! I just love how beautiful she looks.

If I had to create a bucket list for maternity session themes and locations….this would be on it and achieved! I had so much fun documenting this beautiful Mommas twin belly! Yes, she is having twin boys. Such a treat! I love the gowns she chose for her session.

My Gown Closet:

Save some worry and come see what I have inside. I understand it can be hard to shop for yourself right now. You want something to make you feel comfortable and beautiful. But when you book your session with me, I can assure you, I have some options for you to consider. I keep my gown selection to the style you see in my work…warm, neutral and timeless. Keeping the focus on you. With a new body to become accustomed to, it might feel nerve-racking. The outfits I have are flattering to a variety of shapes.

This is entirely complimentary to you! Trust me. I get it. Tight bank, tight schedule. Before your session, we will consult. I will send you images of my gowns and will bring a variety with me. This way, it saves you from the hassle of losing any session time. Typically, we do this a week or two before your photo shoot so I can steam, press, and have your outfit set to go!
