This is a post I’ve been meaning to write for quite some time now. The topic is one that I am extremely passionate about, and one that I talk about with my newborn and baby photography clients any chance I get: the importance of actually printing your photos.

With all the technology we have at our fingertips, including smartphones, tablets, and digital cameras, I believe we have forgotten the importance of having printed photographs—ones we can actually hold in our hands. Even photos taken by professional photographers are often not printed, but saved on a computer somewhere.

Think about how much trust you are placing in technology—technology that can fail at any time, causing you to lose any record of those precious moments you took the time to capture. Don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to having digital images saved as a backup so you can go back and print additional photos down the road, or email images to friends and family, but to have digital images as your only images is setting yourself up for disappointment. Computers, phones, tablets, and hard drives can fail or get lost or stolen. There is also the possibility that you could accidentally delete photos or not be able to find them when you need them.

I have a box in my garage of images from when my own children were babies. Most are from my point-and-shoot days, before I became a professional newborn and baby photographer in Murrieta. Whenever I’m feeling nostalgic, I pull out that box and go through the printed photos, or stare at the images on the walls in my home. My children and I look at them together, holding them in our hands, and talk about days gone by. The images stored on my computer and hard drives are all but forgotten.

I fear that this generation of parents is missing out on those moments of reflection because they don’t take the time print out their photos. We take pictures because we want to remember something—a moment in time, an experience, or anything else that was important enough at the time to document with a photograph. Don’t put your trust in a computer that can fail tomorrow. I encourage you—I implore you—print your photos today to share with your children as they grow and so you have them to show future generations.
